Within CSGB, the research focus of the KU group is on statistical modelling of random shapes. Such modelling is extremely challenging because shapes reside in non-linear spaces. Examples are manifolds, stratified spaces and general metric spaces. Applications may involve tree-like shape spaces.

In the first funding period of CSGB, the KU and the AU-bio group have collaborated in two projects on

  • tomographical reconstruction of protein structures from cryo-electron microscopy images
  • the density and level of repulsion of vesicles in the presynaptic area

Both projects will continue in the second funding period of CSGB. A third application area, taken up in the second funding period, is diffusion weighted imaging.

The KU group is located at Department of Computer Science, University of Copenhagen. The members of the group are experts in image analysis & processing, computer vision, computer simulation, and numerical optimization. The group is directly involved in modelling of brain fiber connections in the human brain. The KU group has received many honours for its research at the biannual conference IPMI which is the oldest and most prestigious conference in methodologies of medical image analysis.

The KU group is led by Mads Nielsen. His research interests include image analysis, image processing, biomedical applications, statistical shape and appearance modelling. He has considerable experience as organizer and leader of research. MN has participated in a Marie Curie Training Network and been coordinator of the research consortium Medical Image Analysis under STVF with DTU and 5 companies. He has been PI on the SRC funded project Learning Imaging Biomarkers. MN has published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers. More information at the homepage of Mads Nielsen.
