The AU-bio group plays a key role in CSGB as a forum for testing and validating methods developed in collaboration with the three other participating research groups.

The research plan for the second funding period of CSGB involves a new imaging modality, focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM). By means of FIB-SEM biological objects with a resolution of 5 nm or less can be visualized. The aim is to study synaptic vesicles, using this imaging technique.

The AU-bio group follows closely the development of two novel microscopy techniques, Clarity and Cubic, and study their implementation. These tissue clearing techniques, that have appeared during the last years, are compatible with various microscopy platforms and open up new opportunities for studying subcellular structures and molecules.

The AU-bio group is located at the University Hospital in Aarhus close to the university campus. The group is developing and implementing quantitative methods in microscopy. Since 2001, AU-bio has published more than 200 papers on new quantitative principles and their applications in microscopy. In recent years, microscopy methods giving access to the molecular level have become increasingly important. This challenge was taken up by the AU-bio group in the first funding period of CSGB where a cryo-electron microscopy facility for visualizing macromolecules was built.

The AU-bio group is led by Jens R. Nyengaard. He is a leader in quantitative microscopy and has competences in various aspects of cell and tissue processing for light, fluorescence and electron microscopy. His lab is the largest supplier of stereology courses worldwide. JRN has published nearly 270 papers. He was president of the International Society for Stereology in 2008-2012 and is now scientific editor of J. Microscopy. More information at the homepage of Jens R. Nyengaard.
