Abstract:

Fitting curves (or fibres) to data points is a well-known problem in statistics. Existing solutions typically put restrictions on the nature of the curves, require an initial cluster-analysis of the data and don't lead naturally to further inference e.g. interval estimation.

We choose to model the curves as integral lines of a gradient field. Using a Bayesian model we analyse the fibre distribution using Monte Carlo techniques. Our approach mostly overcomes the above issues.
